Mission

Preserve and develop the City and County of San Francisco's historic Japantown as a culturally and commercially enriched neighborhood and district, and as a local, national, and international resource;

Strengthen the ethnic diversity of the City and County of San Francisco by bringing together the history and culture of the Nikkei community at and within Japantown for all persons to enjoy and share;

Create an atmosphere of safety, beauty, vitality, and prosperity for the present and future residents, organizations, institutions, and businesses residing or located in Japantown.

Goal 1
Develop Japantown as an historical center, a cultural capital, and a community center for people of Japanese ancestry in America

Objective 1

Expand and strengthen cultural institutions, including religious and social groups

Objective 2
Encourage and promote location of Japanese/Japanese American arts, cultural, entertainment and history, within Japantown

Objective 3
Ensure inclusiveness of ideas and values of the community's multi-generational, multi-cultural, multi-racial, and multilingual or non-English-speaking members

Goal 2
Revitalize Japantown as a thriving commercial and retail district
Objective 1
Strengthen visitor / tourist activity within Japantown.

Objective 2
Expand and strengthen participation in existing merchants group.

Objective 3
Attract and promote new business and investment, especially those businesses that promote products and services unique to the Japanese culture.Objective 4

Objective 5
Coordinate with local merchants association to develop and implement a marketing plan to promote Japantown locally, regionally and worldwide.

Objective 6
Expand market support for retailing in Japantown, including securing a high foot-traffic, retail demand generator replacement strategic in the event of AMC Kabuki's closure.


 
Goal 3
Preserve and expand Japantown as a neighborhood of residents, community-based organizations and institutions, and neighborhood services.

Objective 1
Develop strategies and mechanisms for community control or influence of changes in land use, property, and business ownership within Japantown to promote changes that would benefit the community and to ensure that changes would have positive impact on the community.

Objective 2
Expand, intensify and broaden the residential market in Japantown as a means to generate greater support for and diversify the retail base, neighborhood services and cultural institutions.

Objective 3
Encourage neighborhood-serving businesses (such as laundry, bakery, professional services, cafes, etc.).

Objective 4
Promote neighborhood safety at all hours of the day.

Objective 5
Sustain, strengthen and expand existing community-based organizations and institutions, and systems of social support and services.


 
Goal 4
Improve Japantown's physical environment so that it contributes to the diverse cultural, economic, and neighborhood vitality of the community.

Objective 1
Develop a cohesive urban design vision for Japantown by highlighting its center and better defining its edges so that the place is welcoming and visually unique to its surroundings with a streetscape vocabulary that reflects Japantown's unique history and cultural and community identity.

Objective 2
Improve and upgrade the physical appearance of Japantown's commercial district to ensure continued financial viability of Japantown.

Objective 3
Encourage the design of buildings, plazas, street furniture, ornament, and landscape to reflect the history of Japantown and to contribute to community identity.

Objective 4
Provide a streetscape that is safe, lively, pleasant, and comfortable.

Objective 5
Provide sufficient open space and playgrounds for residents and visitors.

Objective 6
Provide easy access to Japantown for all ages-by foot, car, bicycle, and public transportation.
