The San Francisco Citywide Cultural Resources Survey (SF Survey) is a multi-year program to identify and document places and resources of cultural, historical, and architectural importance to San Francisco’s diverse communities.
The Japantown Task Force began working with SF Planning in December 2022 to develop the Japantown Neighborhood Commercial District Findings. A total of seven public meetings were held between January 2023-September 2024 to present the project and the findings and collect feedback from the community.
In August 2024, renowned cartographer Benjamin Pease and Christine Hikido, a recent recipient of a Masters in City Planning from the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design were brought on to the project team. Mr. Pease and Ms. Hikido reviewed the information and materials to be presented to the Historic Preservation Commission for adoption and conducted research and incorporated information on businesses in the Japantown Neighborhood Commercial District before and after Redevelopment.
The Japantown Neighborhood Commercial District Findings will be presented to the Historic Preservation Commission for approval on October 16, 2024.
